Pantry Challenge 2009...Are You In?

countryliving.com

When the New Year arrives, the first thing that comes to mind is starting new and fresh. Organizing the house, de-cluttering, freshening up. This year we've also got the heavy burden of a struggling economy on our minds. As wives, moms, and caretakers, I think we take it upon ourselves to come up with ways to save our family some dough, and do it in a way that it won't disrupt things too much.

All of these things are on my mind lately. It's time again for a Pantry Challenge! Here's how it works:

-
Go to your pantry, cupboard, wherever you keep your food items stored. Include your refrigerator as well. Take a notebook and list all of the main items in the pantry (flour, applesauce, canned goods, evaporated milk, etc.) Now is also a great time to organize everything and throw out any expired items.

-Here's the challenge: you cannot go to the grocery store for any new food items
(with the exception of the staples like milk, butter, eggs, and meat) or ingredients until you have used up all of these extras you have sitting in your pantry and fridge!

-The goal: to save money, be thrifty, and clean out the old. To waste LESS.

-Ho
w do you do that? You get really creative! Go through your recipe books and find recipes that use those ingredients that you have on hand. Or make one up. Maybe you would normally buy already made dinner rolls...instead,
make them. No cereal left for breakfast? Use up that wheat flour and oatmeal and make some healthy breakfast muffins. Don't buy any cookies or boxed snacks..instead make some delicious baked bars or cookies.

-It's awesome how much money you can save, and more so than that,
how good you will feel about it. Pantry ingredients can go really far, especially after the holidays when it's been stocked with baking goods. You'll discover some really great new recipes that you may not have tried otherwise.

-When you've gotten down to the bare bones, it's time to go shopping and stock the pantry with new again...it'll be the perfect time to clean everything out and label and organize too. The dollar store has great clear containers and baskets for organizing. New year, fresh start!!

-If you are participating in the challenge, make a post at your blog
(or if you are blog-less, post here) about it. You can post a photo of your pantry (if you dare!) and even include a list of your ingredients you need to use up. It'd also be great if you wanted to include some recipes you've made with them or plan to make. Post the link to your blog here and I will make a "board" showing who is participating.

-I'll be listing my ingredients, photos and recipes also.
My pantry is needing a makeover.. I can't wait to see yours!

-All of the participants will be entered into a giveaway for a full year subscription to one of my favorite magazines: Better Homes and Gardens, and the winner's pantry photos/recipes will be posted here also. The biggest prize of all will be your clean, organized pantry and those happy family members with full bellies!

-Don't be afraid...go to your pantry right this minute and start this challenge!
The recipes can be simple or complex. You decide! Just use those ingredients up before you buy anymore. Even if it's a can of prunes that you thought you'd never touch...there's a recipe out there for those too. I can't wait to see what you come up with...

This is an awesome challenge! I really would like to participate because my pantry is bursting at the seams. I'm going to really give this some thought and take a long look at my "stuff" and recipes this weekend.

I really SHOULD do this. I am a grocery store addict. I would go to publix everyday if I had the time/$$. Something about walking up and down the isles looking at all the new/exotic foods.....theraputic!

This is a great challenge. I'll have to check out my pantry/freezer to see what I"ve got. I know I've got lots of baking stuff, from stocking up for Christmas.

Tanya, What a great idea! My husband is always saying we have too much stuff in the pantry. This is a good challenge to make me take stock of the extras we have and use them up. Thanks for giving us some incentive. I will be posting your challenge on my blog!

Shoot. I already did this recently and didn't even think to blog about it. I have to say it's weird to open my freezer right now and see the shelves!

FYI - allrecipes.com has a search freezer where you can enter the ingredients you have on hand and it will spit out recipes to match those ingredient. That could come in handy!

Hi there! I'm new here and I love it already. That's exactly what I've been doing since the New Year. In fact, I converted a regular coat closet into a kitchen storage closet. (My kitchen is the size of a postage stamp with very minimal cabinet space) I'm so excited about my new organized kitchen! I'll post about it if I can get my home computer back up and running. (It's not happy right now)
I'll be glad to link back here when I post about it. In fact, I've added you to my blogroll.

What fun challenge. We have precious little pantry space, so I usually know what's in there. I'm sure I can do some editing though. Thanks for inspiring me to do it! xo Cat

My husband has been literally begging me to clean our pantry forever, lol. I really need to do this challenge. I'm looking forward to seeing other women's pantry photos! What a truly unique and great idea you have here. Off to do a pantry inventory...

Darlin' Tanya, you know that I'm in!
Will get the pantry pic on my sidebar, and begin the recipe/lising/organizing/keeping track process. Cool beans, a neat new year challenge!

Aw man! Guess I'm the only one who keeps mainly journals and vintage papers in her pantry! Wait, there's a bag of dog food and two bags of Kluski noodles from chicago (I can't get them in the south.) I think that about ends the challange for me :0

I recently cleaned out my pantry and have totally reorganised some areas by using lazy susans to store sauce bottles, oils, condiments etc on. Not only are they much more accessible, they are tidier. All the packets of things that haven't got containers, are separated into open baskets and can be pulled out to find what is needed. Hope this helps others when they have used up some of their old ingredients.

Count me! I'll do a series of post on what I find and what we have for dinner for the next few nights.

That is a great idea. I love a clean pantry.

I won't be taking the use it up challenge though. I actually make it a point to keep 3 months worth of food in my pantry at all times. I buy staples (flour, sugar, tomato sauce, chicken broth, etc) in large quantities when it is on sale. I wouldn't want to have to start over with that!

But I will go through and double check that it is all in order by the date I need to use it!!

Tanya I LOVE your site and visit often! I think this is a great challenge. I'm often re-stocking my pantry so my challenge shouldn't be too hard. But I thought I would share one of my favorite recipes that would work well for your challenge.

I had just told my husband last week that I am going to go through my pantry and use everything that's in there before I buy anything new. That's so funny! So yes, I accept that challenge. :)

Tanya,

After reading your Pantry Challenge, I could not resist going home and seeing what I could make using only the contents of my pantry, freezer and refrigerator.

Here is what I have come up with so far:

Saturday Morning Breakfast:

Corn Bread pancakes.

Honey and dill butter

Peaches and apricots baked with a dash of cinnamon and 1/2 cup of craisins

Saturday Lunch:

Baked bell peppers filled with Tuna salad with olives, sweet pickle relish, grated cheddar cheese and fresh chopped red onion.

Saturday dinner:

1 large bag Elbow macaroni
2 pounds frozen ground beef
1 large can Cream of Mushroom soup
1 small can Cream of Celery soup
1 small package frozen carrots
4 stalks of fresh celery chopped
3 cups grated sharp cheedar cheese

boil pasta until tender, but not all the way cooked

brown ground beef,

add both cans of soup to ground beef and 2 cups of milk, bring to a boil.

add frozen carrots and fresh chopped celery

combine ground beef mixuture and macaroni in baking dish, mix in 1/2 of the grated sharp cheddar. Stir until mixed evenly.

use rest of sharp cheddar on top of casserole.

Bake 45 minutes at 350*

serve with a fresh green salad.

Sunday breakfast:

2 cans Comstock brand cherries
2 cans Comstock brand apples
(like you would use for pies, cobblers)
3 cups oats Quaker is my favorite)
1 cup flour
2 tablespoons cinnamon
1/4 brown sugar
1 tablespoon melted butter
small container vanilla yogurt

place canned fruit in baking dish and lighly mix together.

combine dry ingredients in small mixing bowl, sprinkle across the top of the fruit mixture

drizzle melted butter over the top of the dry ingredients

bake at 325* for 25 minutes

Served warm with a few spoonfuls of vanilla yogurt.

Thanks for this challenge! It should be fun to continue to use the contents of my pantry!

I did not go to the store at all this weekend, it was great to just use what we had on hand.

Happy Monday!

Ok...I am going to give it a try. You are right...I am sure I have plenty in my pantry to last my family for quite some time. This will be an awesome and smart challenge for me. Stay away from the grocery store unless the staples are needed. And I will use up my frozen meat, etc too before buying more. Thanks for the incentive, Tanya.
